If it had been me, if I had been running with Jesus, if my life had overlapped with His, what, just what would I ask Him to teach me?

If I had seen what His closest followers had seen, if I had experienced the power and emotion that they had experienced, what would I have wanted Him to imprint on my life?

As an apprentice to the master, as a student to the teacher... what would my single request for instruction be?

Only once are we told that the disciples asked Jesus to teach them something:

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples. ~ Luke 11:1 (ESV)

Jesus had demonstrated the power, passion and pleasure of intimate communication with His Father.  His reliance on this conversational time was more compelling than any miraculous act. And so the request came... "Lord, teach us to pray."

That should tell me something.  His closest companions understood the most significant act in the Savior’s routine. That reality should fan the embers of my soul into inextinguishable flames. It should shape my understanding of what it means to be like Jesus.

Teach us... not only the right words, but the priority of prayer.  Transcendent. Timeless.

One single request, one pattern for life.

Teach us... please teach us.
